Why do you need nutritional support during your weight management journey?
up to 40%
of weight lost on appetite-suppressing medication can come from muscle, not fat — without structured nutritional support [ref1]
1 in 5
people develop a diagnosed nutritional deficiency within their first year of medication, rising from 1 in 8 within just six months [ref2]
nearly 1 in 2
patients stop taking medication within the first year — with weight and health gains beginning to reverse within months of stopping [ref3]

Your medication manages your appetite.
It does not manage what is happening to your body while you eat less.
Muscle Loss
When appetite is suppressed, the body does not automatically prioritise fat as its fuel source. Without adequate protein intake and the right nutritional strategy, a significant proportion of weight lost may come from lean muscle tissue — slowing your metabolism and making long-term weight maintenance harder.

Fatigue and low energy
Temporary hair shedding and changes to skin quality are among the most frequently reported concerns during rapid weight loss. These are not inevitable — they are closely linked to protein insufficiency, zinc and iron status, and caloric restriction. Nutritional intervention addresses the root cause rather than the symptom.

Nutritional deficiencies
Eating substantially less means absorbing substantially less, including nutrients that do not have obvious short-term symptoms. Zinc, B12, folate, vitamin D and essential fatty acids are commonly affected. Many deficiencies can go undetected for months because they develop gradually and silently.

Weight regain after treatment
Research consistently shows that without established nutritional behaviours and metabolic strategies in place before treatment ends, weight regain is common. The medication changes your appetite — it does not change your relationship with food, your metabolic health or improve your habits. That is what nutritional therapy addresses.

Prescriber shortfalls
Your GP or prescribing clinic manages the medical side of your treatment. They are not resourced to provide the level of individual nutritional assessment, planning and ongoing support that makes the difference between a temporary result and a lasting one. This is not a gap in their care - it is simply outside their scope. It is within BANT certified NTs.

These outcomes are not inevitable. They are, however, more likely without expert nutritional support — and significantly less likely with it.
I’d highly recommend to anybody who has ever struggled with their weight and probably lost faith in ever changing it.
I’d highly recommend to anybody who has ever struggled with their weight and probably lost faith in ever changing it. Dr Natalie and her team do change lives for better and I’m the much healthier and much, much happier example of that. My progress is being carefully monitored by Dr Natalie who ensures I'm eating well; I take necessary supplements and I'm becoming more active as my weight loss continues. I've now been introduced to the movement specialist - Ashley - who is helping me get fitter and even more healthy and somehow makes it a fun challenge rather than a torture (which I considered exercise before).

I helped write the national clinical guidance on nutritional support for weight management patients.
Here is what that means for you.
I have been working at the intersection of clinical nutrition and medically supervised weight loss for over 14 years — including contributing to the national clinical guidance that shapes how this area is practiced by nutritional therapists across the UK; this is via BANT's clinical guidance on nutritional support for weight loss medication patients.
What that means practically for you is that my approach is not based on general weight loss principles applied to a new context. It is built on years of direct clinical experience with this patient group, a deep understanding of how the medication interacts with nutritional status and body composition, and a clear evidence base for what actually works in the long term.
I have supported hundreds of patients through medically supervised weight loss, including patients on prescription weight management medication, gastric balloon programmes and bariatric surgery recovery. We have designed our approach to success to include:
-
A comprehensive health assessment covering your full medical history, current treatment, dietary patterns and health goals
-
Targeted laboratory testing to identify nutritional gaps, metabolic markers and any underlying conditions that may affect your response to treatment
-
A personalised nutrition protocol designed to maximise fat loss while actively protecting muscle mass, bone health and energy levels
-
Ongoing monitoring and adjustment as your treatment progresses
-
A clear, evidence-based plan for transitioning off medication and maintaining your results long term

For clients who would also benefit from integrated fitness and mindset coaching, I work in collaboration with Ashley Gillan MSc CPT through NRG Matrix Health Clinic. Details at nrgmatrixclinic.co.uk.
With targeted and personal nutrition and lifestyle guidance you will exprience:

✔ Muscle mass actively protected throughout treatment
✔ Nutritional gaps identified and corrected through testing
✔ Side effects managed through targeted dietary strategy
✔ Sustainable eating habits built during, not after, treatment
✔ A clear, evidence-based plan in place before treatment ends
✔ New habits that keep your weight down
I feel and look 10 years younger, my self confidence has soared. Thank you so much Natalie
Natalie, my nutritionist and health coach, was very understanding and supportive. She gave me all the time in the world, helped me deal with the initial sickness as I started. I'm managing to keep my weight stable by following Natalie's advice and I've got my life back. I feel and look 10 years younger, I have energy, I'm enjoying exercising and my self-confidence has soared. It has been a lifesaver, and I recommend the programme and Natalie to anyone considering losing weight. Thank you so much, Natalie.

Practitioner Guidelines for working with clients on Weight Loss Medications

The British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT)

Official communication from the British Association of Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT):
BANT members are well-positioned to support individuals taking [these] medications, whether in support of weight loss or other conditions.
As Nutritional Therapists in clinical practice you will have undertaken training in metabolic health, safe and sustainable weight loss, and behaviour change techniques as part of your qualification.
This puts members in the unique position to offer the wraparound care for individuals on these medications while being non judgmental and supportive, and of course continue to support individuals seeking to lose weight without tools.
Whilst the NHS is providing some access to coaching, there is little or no known provision for the estimated 80% of clients accessing prescriptions privately.
If you have been prescribed weight management medication, nutritional support is not optional — it is what determines whether your results last.
Appetite suppression alone does not protect your muscle mass, optimise your nutrition, or prepare your body for life after treatment ends
Without expert nutritional support, people on weight management tools commonly experience negative set backs including unwanted symptoms, body composition change and discomfort.
My role is to provide the nutritional expertise that complements your treatment.
I work with both men and women who have been prescribed weight management medication by their GP or specialist, as well as those who have undergone or are preparing for bariatric procedures. My role is to provide the nutritional expertise that complements the medical treatment. I do not prescribe medication. I ensure that everything happening nutritionally during your treatment is managed with the same level of clinical rigour as the medical side.
